Book Review : the Sign of Four

My rating 4 stars

Blurb
Yellow fog is swirling through the streets of London, and Sherlock Holmes himself is sitting in a cocaine-induced haze until the arrival of a distressed and beautiful young lady forces the great detective into action. Each year following the strange disappearance of her father, Miss Morstan has received a present of a rare and lustrous pearl. Now, on the day she is summoned to meet her anonymous benefactor, she consults Holmes and Watson.

My opinion
It is a good way to escape your troubles and travel back to Victorian London. It starts off with a dense yellow fog swirling through the streets of London. Sherlock Holmes and his friend Dr. Watson are sitting home at 221B Baker Street. Sherlock is very bored, he needs a case. Suddenly there is a knock on the door. His visitor is Mary Morstan, a beautiful young woman whose father vanished ten years before. Four years later she began to receive an anonymous gift every year: a large, beautiful pearl. Now she has had an invitation to meet the mysterious person who has been sending her this gift. She asks Holmes and Watson to accompany her. It turns into a great adventure involving a wronged woman, a stolen hoard of Indian treasure, a wooden-legged villain, and a helpful dog. It all ends with an exciting boat chase on the Thames River and with Dr. Watson getting married to Mary Morstan.
I finished this novel in the course of less than 24 hours, and for good reason.  I loved the vocabulary, like I did with the previous one. I liked the characters, both Watson and Holmes. Watson was so romantic in this book, it was completely charming.. And Holmes, there's was some … sexiness in his nonchalance, self-assurance. He was a bit of an arrogant, but still. I guess it would have been more thrilling if there was a bigger punch at the end but anyway, I liked it a lot.
This book is brilliant, and more on par with modern detective novels, unlike it's predecessor. The clues are given for the reader to solve the mystery (which is very unlikely). Holmes marvels in cocaine and morphine and love is in the air for Watson as soon as he sets his eyes on Miss Mary Morston.
Things learnt: a loafer is a lazy person, not a shoe.
