In hardcover for the first time, here is the novel that started it all-the first book in J. D. Robb's number-one New York Times-bestselling In Death series, featuring New York City homicide detective Lieutenant Eve Dallas and Roarke.

It is the year 2058, and technology now completely rules the world. But New York City Detective Eve Dallas knows that the irresistible impulses of the human heart are still ruled by just one thing-passion.

When a senator's daughter is killed, the secret life of prostitution she'd been leading is revealed. The high-profile case takes Lieutenant Eve Dallas into the rarefied circles of Washington politics and society. Further complicating matters is Eve's growing attraction to Roarke, who is one of the wealthiest and most influential men on the planet, devilishly handsome... and the leading suspect in the investigation.
My opinion
This first in the "In Death" series introduces us to dectetive Eve Dallas and the man who will play a big part in her life and the rest of the series, Roarke. Eve must solve the murder of three "companions," one of whom is the granddaughter of a powerful senator. After reading about ten books in this series, I finally got around the reading the first one. They don't have to be read in order, but it was interesting to see how she met several characters who would play roles in future cases.
Futuristic CSI meets Jack the Ripper? How could I not enjoy this story? It was a fast and easy read. The plot kept me guessing and I liked the characters. This book has engaged my interest in mysteries again. It was gripping from the beginning. The characters are great and the love interests had a great story. Detective Dallas is a great cop with good instincts and a vulnerable past which is a double edged sword for her in this case. Roarke is an unexpected support for Det. Dallas and I liked his straightfowardness. Im looking forward to learning more about him, because there is definately more to him. The investigation took great turns which I enjoyed even though I was able to figure out the one involved many chapters before it came out. i have a feeling I'll probably continue reading this series for quite a while.
