An apparently happy marriage.  A beautiful son.  A lovely home.  So what makes Emily Coleman get up one morning and walk right out of her life to start all over again?  Has she had a breakdown?  Was it to escape her dysfunctional family - especially her flawed twin sister Caroline who always seemed to hate her?  And what is the date that looms, threatening to force her to confront her past?  No-one has ever guessed her secret.  Will you?

"A skillful, evocative novel about the price of escape.  Recommended."  Kirkus Reviews

"I couldn't put it down!  An intricate, tightly plotted story, engagingly told."  Helen Castor, author of She-Wolves, Sunday Times Books of the Year

"A well written, intriguing, cleverly structured and compelling read... The twist was excellent and I didn’t see it coming." The Literary Consultancy

And what readers are saying:

"Loved this book, am in awe! Cried three times and not in the obvious places. I thought it was brilliant."

"Wow is all I can say!! That was amazing, how from the first paragraph you just had to keep reading. I read all kinds of books but that was really well written - I re-read the bit about xxxxxx about 5 times ...  It's fantastic... it touches on so many themes and the ending is just awesome."

It keeps you guessing from the very first page.  A couple of times I actually gasped out loud!  It's a real page-turner - a must for fans of Jodi Picoult and David Nicholls' One Day.

My opinion

It was an interesting tale of how Emily finally snapped after spending her entire life dealing with her not no sane family. She runs away and tries to start a new life, leaving me trying to figure out what happened that was so bad it would force her to such extremes and such a drastic change in life style. It was not revealed until the very end, extremely suspenseful. I was very surprised with the final telling of the tale.

One Step Too Far jumps from one time frame to another and from one narrator to another. We learn how Emily meets her husband Ben and their love story along with Emily's dysfunctional family background with her detached philandering father and her twin sister who acts out in ways which keeps her from forming any relationships.

One Step Too Far is one of those reads that will stick with me for days to come. It is an emotional roller coaster as you follow the lives of six different people as the struggle with life's adversities. It is gutsy and real and the characters are flawed and genuine and not all are likable. I was stunned by the brilliant twist and completely glued to the pages until the very end. Originally written in 2010, this is a good debut book and well worth picking up when you see it in the book stores. If you are looking for an entertaining read and don't mind a bit of darkness and chaos give this one a go.
